Each page of Millie the Monarch started out with a charcoal line drawing. After doing the drawing, many of the pages of Millie began with an underpainting in shades of brown to work out the lights and darks. This makes the process of adding color easier and more rich because of the layers. After all the shades of lights and darks and the whole design is worked out, color is added! This allows for better focus on creating jewel-like effects with color and makes each image glow!
